The biodiversity of our
region is our greatest asset

We live in one of the world's 34 biodiversity hotspots. The south west of WA is the only internationally recognised biodiversity hotspot in Australia and the Busselton-Augusta region is one of 15 national hotspots. To be recognised as a hotspot for biodiversity means that our region is home to an extraordinary number of unique species (more than 1500), but the South West has lost 70% of its original habitat due to development, changing land use and climate change.

The Biodiversity Hotspot project aims to identify key landscapes and species and work with land managers to protect these assets. We do this by providing technical advice and fincinal assistance to land managers to:

  • Fence remnant vegetation from stock.
  • Control environmental weeds
  • Control feral animals
  • Rehabilitate areas using local native plant species
  • Protect vegetation from phytopthora dieback

The CCG has a separate Weed and Feral animal project that is open to all land managers to control declared weeds and feral animals such as cats and foxes.

What can you do?

  • Actively manage your property for biodiversity
  • Plant local native plants in your garden
  • Fence areas of bush and waterways from all stock including cows, sheep and horses
  • Lock up your dogs and cats at night
  • Revegetate areas to create corridors for wildlife between areas of bush
  • Treat areas of bush for dieback protection
  • Form 'friends groups' in urban areas.
